Bailey Bestul post-Architecture
This simple plan takes inspiration from the many post-and-beam-style houses constructed in and around Altadena by the California Modernists. The one-story volume maximizes residents' access to light and air via large walls of operable glass doors in the open plan great room, which opens onto a covered patio space.
A masonry wall divides this central living area from the primary bedroom suite and features a pass-through fireplace that opens to both the primary bedroom and the dining area in the main space. This masonry wall extends beyond the building envelope to separate the great room patio from the more private outdoor space off of the primary bedroom suite. Residents may choose to add a midcentury one-bedroom accessory dwelling unit (ADU) connected by a covered walkway should they desire more space or a source of rental income. Although the design already features a covered carport off the kitchen entry, an additional covered parking area may also be constructed at the rear of the lot.
